In Brief: Zoo expansion revives group

Sunday, March 9, 2008 - Commercial Appeal

A group of Midtown residents on Saturday announced that they have revived Citizens to Preserve Overton Park, a group founded in 1957 that successfully fought plans to extend Interstate 40 through the Memphis park.

An expansion of the Memphis Zoo that resulted in cutting down four acres of forest in the park prompted the move.

"If the zoo continues to chart its course without neighborhood or community input, we could lose our irreplaceable Old Forest acre by acre," Stacey Greenberg said in a statement.

Greenberg, Amy Stewart-Banbury and Naomi Van Tol incorporated CPOP -- which has overtonparkforever.org as its Web site -- on Wednesday as a Tennessee not-for-profit organization, they said.
