National recognition for Overton Park!

Now, this is awesome news: Overton Park was just selected by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) for their annual Landslide program.

Go here to read all about it!

TCLF established this program in 2002 "to focus attention on culturally significant landscapes at risk for alteration or destruction" and our park is one of 16 sites selected for Landslide 2009 from a field of nearly 100 sites nationwide.

We're grateful to the fine folks at TCLF for honoring Overton Park, and for the work they do to raise awareness of threatened public landscapes across the country!

I want to remind everyone of the Veterans Day Ceremony to be held at the Doughboy Statue this Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. (11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month)

The DAR really deserves a lot of credit for keeping this going every year. I believe it is especially interesting for those who haven't to read the names of the fallen from each of the Wars at the Veterans Memorial Plaza. There are some prominent Memphis names and some not so prominent.

Even if you are not a Veteran, please attend if you can to support the DAR and the work that the gentleman (whose name I do not know) has done to keep the markers clear and clean.

Unfortunately, he told me that for some reason which I can't explain, the Doughboy plaque cannot be cleared of all of the defacement it has suffered over the years.

This ceremony won't last much more than thirty minutes. It is not political. It is just a means to honor a bunch of guys who lived greatly shortened lives in service to their country.

Therefore, if you are off work Wednesday or you can get off work, I hope you will attend.

I apologize for placing my post regarding Veterans Day underneath this article.

I tried to post this on Facebook but it was rejected even though I had attained "fan" status.

I am technologically challenged!

No problem, Jody... it was probably just too lengthy for a Facebook comment. Please feel free to post a short notice on our Facebook wall.

Thank you!
